Puerto Montt / Chile / In southern Chile, about a thousand kilometers from the capital, Santiago, you will find Puerto Montt. The city was founded by German colonizers in 1853 and was named after the then Chilean president who invited them to the country. The economy of the city, which was leveled by an earthquake in 1960 only to be rebuilt later – larger and more modern –, is based on agriculture, livestock farming, and fishing, but it is also becoming increasingly important as a tourist destination. Puerto Montt is the gateway to the Chiloé Archipelago, and people come here primarily for the stunning nature.
