Katakolon (Olympia) / Greece
Katakolon is a small port town on the western coast of the Peloponnese. It has an unassuming but pleasant character – it is calm, easy to navigate, and easily accessible. The center consists of a short promenade with cafes, taverns, and shops that satisfy the basic needs of visitors. On the outskirts of the town begins a nice beach that stretches along the coast for several kilometers. Although the town itself is not particularly remarkable, it holds an important place as a gateway to one of the key monuments of ancient Greece – the famous archaeological site in Olympia.
The history of Katakolon dates back to antiquity when it served as a port for nearby Olympia. In the Middle Ages, the Pontikokastro fortress was built here, the remains of which are freely accessible today. Also worth a visit is the small Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, where functional models of inventions from the ancient period can be seen.
The main goal of most visitors is ancient Olympia – the place where the Olympic Games were born. They originated in 776 BC and were held every four years for more than a thousand years. During the games, war conflicts were suspended, and competitions were held in honor of the god Zeus. The tradition was ended by Emperor Theodosius I in 393 AD. Due to its extraordinary historical significance, Olympia is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A number of monuments from the original site have survived to this day. Visitors can see the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, where the famous, now lost statue of the god Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, once stood. The foundations of the Temple of Hera have also been preserved, in front of which the Olympic flame is symbolically lit every four years. It is then transported to the venue of the modern games, which were revived at the end of the 19th century and are still held today. Among the most interesting parts of the site are the palaestra, where wrestlers trained, and the gymnasium intended for other sports disciplines. The highlight of the visit is undoubtedly the stadium itself, which could accommodate up to 45,000 spectators. Looking at its grassy embankments, one can easily imagine what the atmosphere was like during the ancient games. Two museums are located near the site. The Archaeological Museum exhibits statues, ceramics, and decorations from the Temple of Zeus. The Museum of Ancient Greek Technology presents ancient inventions such as hydraulic devices, automatic mechanisms, or the first alarm clock.
Olympia is a place that still exudes sacredness and grandeur today, reminding us of the importance of sport, respect, and cultural heritage that has endured for thousands of years.
