Taranto

Taranto / Italy

The picturesque Italian city of Tarent, known as Taranto, is characterized by its rich history and enchanting harbor. In the distant past, it was known for its production of oysters, mussels, wool, and also the art of dyeing fabrics. Currently, the port in the newer part of the city holds significant importance, also serving as a naval base for the Italian Navy. Tarent is also the seat of an archbishop.

The city was founded by the Greeks in 706 BC and named "Taras" after a hero from Greek mythology. During the Second Punic War, it sided with the Carthaginians against the Romans. In later years, Tarent paid for this when the Romans conquered the city. During World War II, the port in Taranto became the target of an attack by British Swordfish torpedo bombers on the night of November 11-12, 1940.

Now, Tarent is known for its monuments and cultural heritage, attracting tourists from all over the world. Various exhibitions, musical and theatrical concerts, and interesting festivals are often held here. Enjoy a walk through the ancient streets full of colorful houses, visit the impressive San Cataldo Cathedral, and discover the medieval Aragonese Castle. The archaeological museum with its magnificent Greek and Roman artifacts is also interesting. Around Taranto, there are beautiful beaches with rugged cliffs that create picturesque hidden corners.
