Lofoten is among the oldest permanently inhabited areas of Norway. The first people lived here more than 11,000 years ago, and since the Bronze Age, agriculture played a significant role alongside fishing. Already in the early Viking period, the town of Vågan was established in eastern Lofoten, considered the oldest known town in northern Norway. For more than a thousand years, Lofoten was the center of cod fishing, and the trade in dried fish brought significant importance and wealth to the area. Leknes itself began to develop significantly only in the 20th century as a commercial and transport center of the archipelago.
