Reykjavík / Iceland

Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, is a place where modern architecture naturally blends with untouched nature. Colorful houses, cozy cafes, geothermal baths, and the unique atmosphere of the northernmost capital city in the world create an ideal starting point for exploring the land of fire and ice. Just a short distance from the city, you can find some of Iceland's most famous natural wonders, including Þingvellir, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thanks to its unique location, Reykjavík is among the most interesting stops offered by cruises in Northern Europe.

What to Taste in Reykjavík?

Icelandic cuisine is primarily based on fresh fish, lamb meat, and high-quality local ingredients that reflect the pure Icelandic nature.

  • Plokkfiskur – a fish mixture with potatoes and creamy sauce, a typical homemade Icelandic dish.
  • Lamb meat – thanks to free grazing in the pure Icelandic nature, Icelandic lamb is among the highest quality in the world. It is most often served roasted or grilled.
  • Skyr – a traditional Icelandic dairy product similar to thick yogurt, served with blueberries or other forest fruits.
  • Pylsur – Icelandic hot dog, a popular fast food with distinctive sauces and onions.
  • Hákarl – fermented shark, a traditional specialty with a very specific taste and historical significance.
  • Brennivín – a traditional Icelandic spirit flavored with caraway, also nicknamed "Black Death," is one of the most famous local alcoholic beverages.

Why Will You Love Reykjavík?

  • Landscape between fire and ice – Reykjavík lies in an area where volcanic activity, glacial scenery, and geothermal springs meet. Nearby are sought-after locations like the Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle, or the Þingvellir National Park, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
  • A city with a modern face and cultural background – Reykjavík is known for its diverse architecture, galleries, and contemporary building design. Its landmarks include Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa Concert Hall, and Perlan with a view of the entire surroundings.
  • Unmistakable atmosphere – cozy cafes, geothermal baths, colorful streets, and long summer days create a charm that is hard to experience elsewhere.

Practical Tips:

  • Official language: Icelandic, but English is commonly spoken.
  • Currency: Icelandic króna (ISK)
  • Opening hours: Shops are usually open from around 10:00 to 18:00, restaurants often later into the evening.
  • Public transport: Reykjavík's center is compact, and most attractions can be comfortably visited on foot. Reykjavík is served by the bus network Straeto, which connects the center with the main parts of the city and surroundings.
  • Weather: Reykjavík has a variable oceanic climate, where sun, wind, and rain can alternate during the day. Summers are rather cool, winters mild but windy. Layered clothing is therefore suitable, and it's important to consider that the weather can change quickly.

The Most Interesting from Reykjavík's History:

The history of Reykjavík began in 874 when, according to Icelandic sagas, the Norwegian settler Ingólfur Arnarson settled here, considered the first permanent resident of Iceland. The city's name means "Smoky Bay" and refers to the steam rising from the surrounding geothermal springs, which was a characteristic landmark for the first settlers. From a small fishing settlement, it developed over the centuries into the political, cultural, and economic center of the country. Although Reykjavík is a modern metropolis, it has retained a peaceful Nordic atmosphere and an exceptional connection with the surrounding nature, which is its greatest wealth.
