Helsinki

Helsinki / Finland

Helsinki, the capital and largest city of Finland, is one of the most charming metropolises in Northern Europe. It stretches along the rugged coastline of the Gulf of Finland, dotted with numerous islets, bays, and sea channels, giving the city its distinctive character. The combination of the sea, modern architecture, and a serene Nordic atmosphere makes Helsinki a popular stop for cruise trips.

What to taste in Helsinki?

The gastronomy of Helsinki is based on fresh ingredients, simplicity, and natural flavors that reflect the Nordic landscape and proximity to the sea.

  • Lohikeitto – creamy salmon soup with potatoes, dill, and cream, typical of Finnish cuisine
  • Karjalanpiirakka – traditional Karelian pie made from rye dough filled with rice porridge, served with egg butter
  • Paistetut muikut – small fish fried until golden, especially popular at markets and harbor bistros
  • Poronkäristys – gently sautéed reindeer meat with mashed potatoes and lingonberries
  • Korvapuusti – fragrant cinnamon roll, an integral part of the local café culture

Why you'll love Helsinki?

  • Northern elegance and architecture – Helsinki's historic center will enchant you with Senate Square featuring the Helsinki Cathedral, the Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral with golden domes, and modern buildings like the Oodi Library or the Finlandia Hall concert hall. Together, they give the city its typical Nordic character.
  • The sea as part of the city – the rugged coastline of the Gulf of Finland, harbor promenades, and archipelagos create a unique atmosphere. The city ferry easily takes you to the historic maritime fortress Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Tranquility, design, and lifestyle – cafes, markets, parks, and design districts offer a pleasant balance between urban life and Nordic tranquility. Helsinki is thus ideally suited for leisurely exploration during a cruise stop.

The most interesting from Helsinki's history:

Helsinki was founded in 1550 by the Swedish king Gustav I Vasa as a trading city meant to rival the significant port of Tallinn on the opposite shore of the Gulf of Finland. However, real development began in the early 19th century when Finland became part of the Russian Empire and Tsar Alexander I moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki. It was then that the monumental Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral, and other representative buildings were constructed, which still shape the appearance of the historic center. After Finland declared independence in 1917, Helsinki became a symbol of the independent state and gradually transformed into a modern metropolis, which today is among the most important centers of culture, design, and innovation in Northern Europe.

Getting to the port:

Cruise ships in Helsinki use several harbor piers, most often Hernesaari, Katajanokka, South Harbour (Eteläsatama) or West Harbour. Information about where your ship will dock can be found on the Port of Helsinki website or in your travel documentation. Smaller ships often dock at Katajanokka or South Harbour, from where the historic center is accessible on foot. The largest cruise ships primarily use the Hernesaari and West Harbour terminals, which are approximately 3–4 km from the center.

If your ship docks at the Hernesaari or West Harbour terminals, some shipping companies provide shuttle service to the center of Helsinki. At the Katajanokka and South Harbour terminals, shuttle buses are usually not needed, as the main attractions are accessible on foot within 15 to 25 minutes.
