Corner Brook (Newfoundland) / Canada
On the western coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland, in the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, lies Corner Brook, the northernmost city on the eastern coast of the country and home to about 20,000 residents.
As early as 1767, Captain James Cook arrived in the area, commemorated by a monument on the summit of Crow Mountain, towering above the city. Even in the mid-19th century, Corner Brook was just a small fishing village, today it is a popular cruise ship port.
The Grenfell Art Gallery is part of the local university and exhibits works by local and regional artists and sculptors. Those who want to learn more about the natural, cultural, and social history of the city should visit the Corner Brook Museum, while railway history enthusiasts should not miss a tour of the historic trains.
Fans of active leisure will enjoy a walk along one of the beautiful hiking trails around Glynmill Inn Pond in the city center, while golfers can hit a few balls just a stone's throw from the harbor. Nature lovers can enjoy a walk through the wetlands, while the more active can trek around Three Bear Mountain with stunning views of the city, bay, and Blomidon Mountains.
An interesting feature is the salmon ladder on the Corner Brook River, which allows these beautiful fish to overcome the local dam on their journey upstream.
The city is a gateway to the beautiful landscape of deep forests, which turn all shades of the rainbow in autumn, and a good starting point for whale watching, as the local waters are home to them. Gros Morne National Park, just an hour's drive from the city, combines dramatic fjords, high mountains, beautiful beaches, marshes, forests, cliffs... and is rightly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In winter, the area is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts heading to the Marble Mountain ski resort and the Blow-Me-Down cross-country ski trails.
Corner Brook is an ideal place to taste some of Newfoundland's specialties. The basis is fresh cod, perhaps in the form of fish 'n' brewis, overnight soaked and then cooked to tender salted and pickled cod with hard bread. Those who prefer meat can try moose, for example.
