Sir Bani Yas / United Arab Emirates

Sir Bani Yas, the largest natural island of the United Arab Emirates, represents one of the most unique stops offered by cruises on the Red and Arabian Seas. Unlike modern cities full of skyscrapers, here you will discover a vast nature reserve where thousands of animals from around the world roam freely. The island is also known for its beautiful beaches, rich marine life, and unique combination of nature, history, and relaxation. Sir Bani Yas offers a completely different face of the United Arab Emirates and is one of the destinations that are hard to forget during a cruise.

What to taste on Sir Bani Yas Island?

The island's cuisine is based on the traditional flavors of the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East. Thanks to its location by the Persian Gulf, fresh fish and seafood are also abundant here.

  • Grilled fish – fresh fish from the Persian Gulf prepared on the grill with lemon, herbs, and aromatic spices.
  • Seafood – shrimp, calamari, or lobsters are among the most popular specialties of local restaurants.
  • Machboos – a traditional Emirati dish of fragrant rice, meat, or fish seasoned with a blend of oriental spices.
  • Hummus – a smooth chickpea cream with tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice, served with fresh Arabic bread.
  • Luqaimat – small fried dough balls drizzled with date syrup or honey, which are among the most popular Emirati desserts.
  • Arabic coffee (Gahwa) – traditional coffee with cardamom served with dates is a symbol of local hospitality.

The most interesting from the history of Sir Bani Yas Island:

Sir Bani Yas was for centuries an almost uninhabited island, whose inhabitants mainly lived off fishing and pearl hunting. A significant transformation came in 1971 when the founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, launched an ambitious project to transform the island into a nature reserve. His goal was to restore the original ecosystem of the Arabian Peninsula and create a safe haven for endangered animal species. Today, the reserve covers most of the island and is home to more than 17,000 free-roaming animals, including rare Arabian oryx, giraffes, cheetahs, and hyenas. A significant archaeological discovery is also the remains of a 7th-century Christian monastery, proving that the island was inhabited long before the formation of the modern United Arab Emirates.

Getting to the port:

Cruise ships dock at the modern Sir Bani Yas Cruise Jetty, which was opened in 2021 and allows for the simultaneous handling of up to two large cruise ships. Thanks to the 600-meter-long jetty, passengers can disembark directly onto the island without the need to use tenders.

Upon disembarking, you find yourself just a few steps away from Sir Bani Yas Cruise Beach, a private beach reserved exclusively for cruise ship passengers. Sun loungers, umbrellas, restaurants, cafes, bars, showers, and other facilities are available. Organized safaris, trips to the nature reserve, or to the historic Christian monastery also depart from here.

Sir Bani Yas is not a home port but an exclusive stop during cruises in the Persian Gulf, so all transportation on the island is organized by the cruise company or local tour providers.
