Kingstown / Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Kingstown is the capital of the independent state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and, with just under 20,000 inhabitants, it is also the largest city. It is located on the southwestern coast of the main island of Saint Vincent, which, along with the smaller Grenadine islands, is part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the southeastern Caribbean.
The island, known today as Saint Vincent, has long been inhabited by the indigenous people known as the Caribs. The first Europeans to conquer the island were the French, who also founded modern Kingstown in the 1720s. The French cultivated coffee, tobacco, indigo, corn, and sugar cane on Saint Vincent with the help of African slaves, but lost the island to the British after the Seven Years' War in 1763. France took control of the island once more between 1779-83, but it was ruled by Great Britain until the 1970s. The British continued the agricultural activities of the French and had to fight several battles with the island's original inhabitants. The eruption of the La Soufrière volcano in 1902 left two thousand dead and devastated land, and the country's economy declined. Saint Vincent gained independence from Britain in 1979, when it was also hit by another devastating earthquake and several strong hurricanes in the following years.
The country consists of a total of 32 islands, only nine of which are inhabited. Although agriculture remains the main economic activity, the role of tourism is growing year by year, thanks in part to the famous film Pirates of the Caribbean, which was filmed here.
Kingstown is famous for its botanical gardens, which were established in 1765 and are among the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. The gardens are home to many species of tropical plants and aviaries with beautiful birds. On the mountain ridge above the bay, at an altitude of 190 meters, stands Fort Charlotte, built by British colonizers, offering stunning views of the entire archipelago.
In the center of Kingstown, you will find several 19th-century churches, including the interesting Saint Mary's Cathedral. The island's most beautiful beaches are located on its southern coast: among the most famous is Villa Beach, just a 10-minute drive from the city.
From Kingstown, you can embark on one of many excursions – popular ones include hikes to the island's highest mountain, the La Soufrière volcano (1,234 m), or a boat ride through the Grenadines. The island is covered with dense rainforest and its waters are rich, making it a paradise for ecotourists and lovers of snorkeling and diving.
