Mumbai (Bombay) / India

Mumbai, the bustling metropolis on the western coast of India, is a city of contrasts, where colonial architecture blends with modern skyscrapers and traditional lifestyle with the dynamic pace of a big city. The financial and cultural center of the country attracts visitors with the iconic Gateway of India, bustling markets, diverse cuisine, and an unforgettable atmosphere that never sleeps. The historic center with unique Victorian architecture is also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which only underscores the uniqueness of this fascinating city. Thanks to its unique history, diverse culture, and location on the Arabian Sea coast, it is one of the most interesting stops offered by cruises in Asia.

What to taste in Mumbai?

Mumbai is considered the capital of Indian street food, and the local cuisine offers a range of specialties that originated here or are inextricably linked to the city.

  • Vada Pav – the most famous specialty of Mumbai. A spicy potato patty in a bun served with chutney and fried chili peppers is often referred to as the "Indian burger".
  • Pav Bhaji – a mix of vegetables, tomatoes, butter, and aromatic spices served with toasted bread. This popular street food originated in Mumbai.
  • Bhel Puri – a light street snack made from puffed rice, vegetables, peanuts, fresh herbs, and sweet and sour sauces, which is perfect for refreshing during hot days.
  • Bombay Sandwich – a layered sandwich filled with vegetables, cheese, herb chutney, and bold spices. One of the most popular snacks among locals.
  • Masala Chai – traditional Indian tea with milk and a blend of fragrant spices, which is an integral part of everyday life for Mumbai residents.

Why will you love Mumbai?

  • Colonial architecture – Gateway of India, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Rajabai Clock Tower and the historic district Fort recall the period of British rule and are among the most beautiful landmarks of the city.
  • Pulsating atmosphere – bustling markets, street stalls, coastal promenades, and the daily life of millions of residents create a unique energy that is hard to experience elsewhere.
  • Gateway to India – Mumbai is the ideal place to experience the vibrant Indian culture, local traditions, and the modern face of one of the fastest-growing countries in the world.

The most interesting from Mumbai's history:

The story of Mumbai began on seven islands, which were home to fishing communities for centuries. In the 16th century, the area was controlled by the Portuguese and in 1661, the city became part of the dowry of the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza and came into the hands of the English king Charles II. A few years later, it was taken over by the British East India Company, which developed Mumbai into one of the most important ports in Asia. Most of the grand colonial buildings that define the appearance of the historic center today date from this period. After gaining independence from India in 1947, Mumbai transformed into the financial heart of the country and also became home to Bollywood, the largest film industry in the world. Today, it is a symbol of modern India – a city where rich history naturally blends with the fast pace of contemporary life.
