Embark on a scenic boat cruise, watch whales, and witness the dramatic calving of icebergs from massive glaciers. Hike up Marathon Mountain or to Exit Glacier, one of the most accessible in Alaska. Go kayaking and also visit the excellent Alaska SeaLife Center aquarium. The glacier, 120 kilometers long and nearly 11 kilometers wide, is named after the president of the National Geographic Society, and unlike most, it is not retreating but rather expanding. Admire the 400-year-old mass of ice rising 30 stories above the water's surface. Watch as huge chunks of ice break off from its face and crash thunderously into the sea. Delight in the icebergs, lazily floating on the surface, often shrouded in magical mist, and keep your eyes open: the local waters are home to sea otters, sea lions, and also whales.
