Vancouver (British Columbia) / Canada (embarkation) / At the mouth of the Fraser River into the Pacific Ocean lies Vancouver, the most significant city on Canada's west coast. This charming metropolis, surrounded by mountains and stunning nature, is often referred to as one of the best places to live on earth. Contributing to this are the mild climate, numerous tourist attractions, and friendly and kind residents. Vancouver is an important sports center – for example, the Winter Olympics were held here in 2010. In the summer season, it is a popular port and destination for cruise ships, for which it is an ideal gateway to Alaska.

Juneau (Alaska) / USA / In the Gastineau Channel, surrounded by dramatic peaks covered with eternal ice, lies the most peculiar of American capitals. Juneau, the capital of Alaska since 1906, is not connected to the rest of the country by any roads, so the only way to get here is by sea or air. Enjoy stunning views from the top of Mount Roberts and admire one of the country's most accessible glaciers, Mendenhall, during a hike, boat ride, or scenic flight. Visit the Glacier Gardens with trees "growing" upside down and the salmon hatchery, where you can learn everything about these fish. Tour the State Capitol, shop for glacier soap, and finish it all off with baked salmon and a well-chilled Alaskan beer.

Icy Strait Point (Alexander Archipelago) / USA / It wasn't until 2004 that cruise ships first opened up a destination owned by the Tlingit people. Today, the port in Icy Strait on the western coast of Alaska is an ideal place to delve into the culture of the indigenous people and a gateway to pristine nature. Stroll through the town of Hoonah with its traditional wooden architecture and visit the interesting museum in the former cannery. Take a walk through the Tongass rainforest, observe brown bears by the Spasski River, and don't miss a cruise to see humpback whales and orcas. Catch your own salmon, learn how to fillet it properly, or simply have it professionally prepared at one of the great local restaurants.

Sitka (Alexander Archipelago) / USA / Thousands of years ago, it was the home of the Tlingit tribe, in the 19th century the heart of Russian America, handed over to America in 1867 and serving as the capital of Alaska until 1906. The fascinating history of Sitka, one of the most significant fishing centers in the USA, complemented by breathtaking nature, makes it one of the most exotic Alaskan ports. At the Sheldon Jackson Museum, get acquainted with the indigenous people of Alaska, and at the Fortress of the Bear, meet the mighty inhabitants of its forests. Visit the former residence of the Russian bishop and the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Michael from the mid-19th century. Embark on a trek through the wilderness of the Tongass National Forest and explore the seabirds of Saint Lazaria Island.

Skagway / USA / At the end of the 19th century, a sleepy settlement in a narrow glacial valley on the Taiya River transformed into a bustling town for a few years. As suddenly as it came, the gold rush ended quickly, but its legacy is still evident in Skagway at every turn. Let the old good times breathe on you as you stroll through the historic center with its typical wooden buildings, and then set off for breathtaking views from the former gold rush narrow-gauge railway, carved into the granite ridge. Admire the stunning landscape of the Tongass National Forest and its wild inhabitants. Go whale watching, ride a dog sled, and finally, try your luck at gold panning.

Hubbard Glacier (scenic cruising) / USA / In the narrow bay of Disenchantment in the eastern part of Alaska lies the world's largest tidal glacier and one of the country's most beautiful natural phenomena. The glacier, 120 kilometers long and nearly 11 kilometers wide, is named after the president of the National Geographic Society, and unlike most, it is not retreating but rather expanding. Admire the 400-year-old mass of ice rising 30 stories above the water's surface. Watch as huge chunks of ice break off from its face and crash thunderously into the sea. Delight in the icebergs, lazily floating on the surface, often shrouded in magical mist, and keep your eyes open: the local waters are home to sea otters, sea lions, and also whales.

Seward / USA (disembarkation) / In Resurrection Bay, located on the Kenai Peninsula, lies an important port and gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. Seward, founded in 1903 and leveled by the great Alaskan earthquake in 1964, is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Embark on a scenic boat cruise, watch whales, and witness the dramatic calving of icebergs from massive glaciers. Hike up Marathon Mountain or to Exit Glacier, one of the most accessible in Alaska. Go kayaking and also visit the excellent Alaska SeaLife Center aquarium. If you're a fisherman, catch your own salmon or halibut, and if not, at least enjoy it in one of the local top-notch restaurants.
