Ushuaia, currently home to about 50,000 inhabitants, was founded in 1884 and became a penal colony at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the former prison houses an interesting Antarctic museum. The area is an important fishing center, but the main part of its income now comes from tourism. People come here for the beautiful nature of Tierra del Fuego National Park and to observe penguins, sea lions, orcas, and huge colonies of birds.
